BrainsWay Deep TMS for OCD: Medical Device Development Case Study

I wrote an educational case study of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (Deep TMS) for obsessive-compulsive disorder, following one device from development to clinical use.

Fig. 1 The right half of a real human brain, seen from the midline (an MRI-based reconstruction, with regions from the Desikan-Killiany atlas), under the right half of an H7 coil, placed 4 cm in front of the leg motor area as in the treatment protocol; it targets the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The windings are drawn at their published sizes and the field weakens with depth at about the rate measured for the H7; the exact layout of the windings is schematic. What it covers

  • Development of the H7 coil
  • The provocation-based, multicenter, sham-controlled pivotal trial and its Y‑BOCS outcomes
  • FDA De Novo clearance (2018)
  • Post-market outcomes
  • Reimbursement

What it is not

  • Not a clinical case report of a patient I treated
  • Not a consulting project for the manufacturer
  • Not a regulatory submission
  • Not peer reviewed or published
